Prostate Cancer Project

This piece of work from the Greater Manchester Healthwatch Network, led by Healthwatch Bury, brings together insights from 146 men, alongside interviews and focus groups, to better understand awareness, diagnosis pathways, treatment experiences, and follow-up care.

The findings highlight several important opportunities for improvement. In particular:

  • Awareness remains low, with 53% of respondents reporting no symptoms prior to diagnosis
  • Diagnosis pathways are inconsistent, often relying on chance or patient persistence rather than proactive approaches
  • Almost half of respondents (49%) reported receiving no follow-up support after treatment

While experiences of clinical care are generally positive, these gaps point to the need for a more consistent and joined-up approach across the system. The report also includes a set of practical recommendations focused on improving early diagnosis, standardising PSA conversations in primary care, strengthening follow-up support, and addressing health inequalities.
