This piece of work aimed to explore how far Bolton has come in terms of embedding co-design, how useful the group feels, to what extent the group feel they are meeting their objectives and how members feel their work can continue in the long term

Summary

Comments were grouped into the following themes:

  • Usefulness
  • Embeddedness
  • Impact
  • Support

Key findings

  • The group felt that the process helps build confidence and is useful for influencing but concerns were raised about their being limited ‘buy-in’ from system leaders.
  • Members felt their knowledge and understanding of co-design had changed over the 12 month period however actual application of this approach in local service provision remains very much ‘hit and miss’.
  • The group felt they had created opportunities to share and there was a culture of joint working.
  • There was an ever increasing community of practice who had a shared view of how engagement co-design should be done.
  • Members reporting feeling empowered, however some had not taken any tangible steps to move beyond the co-design training.

As a whole the members feel the groups has provided them with a space in which to gain an increased understanding and desire for co-design.

There has also been an increased understanding locally about the purpose and benefits of a co-design approach.

Fundamentally however there needs to be more support from system leaders in embed this way of working to ensure that co-design moves away from ‘nice to do’ to ‘need to do’.
