Towards A Set Of Patient Experience Outcomes

The Bolton GP Federation asked Healthwatch to develop and deliver a small piece of public engagement to gather patient’s views and ideas about what aspects of such a service would improve their experience of accessing health and well-being services.

Summary:

59 people were spoken to at 5 different venues in Farnworth.  The data collected via semi-structured interviews were analysed against 3 criteria:

  • Specific mentions of services and clinicians
  • Comments elaborating patient experience outcomes
  • Comments about buildings or sites

Three separate reports were created from this and an addition 2 snapshot reports around ‘acceptable waiting times’ and ‘telehealth’

615 comments were collected in total of which 60 were used for this particular report.  The key findings are as follows:

  • 16 people said that patient experiences would be improved with extended hours/out of hours for those in work.
  • 10 people referred to acceptable waiting times with most feeling they should be able to get an appointment within 2-5 days.
  • There was reference to individuals not wanting receptionists to triage them and wanting more time with clinicians.

Conclusion:

Individuals expressed the importance of being able to get appointments outside the standard 9-5 to enable them to fit this in with work.  Although extended hours/ out of hours appointments are already available it would seem individuals are unaware of this or are perhaps thinking this should be available at their specific GP practice as opposed to having to attend an alternative site.

There was also mention of more personalised care with patients having greater choice and control over their treatment path.
